jwill,

I would get on of the L/U service kits from a Johnson/Evinrude dealer.

It comes with a quart of "Hi-Vis" oil and a pump that goes on top of the oil can. You probably should pick up an extra quart of Hi Vis oil too.

Also, get new drain and fill plug screw seals.

1. Remove the drain screw from the bottom of the lower unit. It is typically on the downward edge of the gearcase "bullet".

Remove the vent screw from the top of the gear case. It is typically just above the cavitation plate.

2. Let the oil drain out.

4. Replace the fill and drain plug seals.

5. Fill the lower unit from the bottom (drain) hole. This is done this way to prevent air getting trapped.

6. Before you remove the fill hose, install the vent screw and tighten.

7. Quickly remove the fill hose and install the drain screw.

the only hole that i can see on the lower unit is one at the top do i have to pump it out? Then fill it back threw that same hole? If so do i just fill it to the bottom of the hole? The closest dealer to me is over 75 miles is that the only place where you can get the oil for this?

change the washer on the plugs. it is usually over looked. these are cheap and could save a water leak later.

JWill,
Are there any screws down on the body of the motor near where the propellor is?

I am sure there is an internet store that sells the lube you need. Do a search. One of the bigger places I am sure sells it.

Mic

JWill: Are you sure of that model number? - check the g in the model number. If your's is electric shift I believe they still use Hi-Vis if it's manual shift you can get Lubrimatic at Wally World.

Fair Skys, Smooth water

jwill,

Your engine definetely has a drain and fill. Look on the right side (drivers side)of the gearcase. It faces slightly downward.

You can use any outboard gearcase lube. Just make sure you replace the screw seals.
