Wanted to show my set up for checking my 1987 110 without being in the water. Just need to watch temp of water in barrel.

You should have a taller barrel as the top of yours just makes it level with the water pump you really should be over that by a couple inches.

When you run it in that barrel, leave the garden hose running into the barrel. That will add cool water to the barrel, causing it to overflow. The big thing is that engine will put out a lot of exhaust heat, and will warm that water quickly. So, keep the garden hose running to keep the water temp lower. Why not just purchase a $5 set of ears/muffs and run it directly off the hose?

Just had the barrel and decided to use it. I check temp with hand held temp gage the output from tale tail water stream is great.

He has the right idea with the barrel. Muffs don't work well and don't tell you if the water pump is operating well as they force the water in. True story

I like the barrel too. Provides some back pressure to further test the motor....and its much quieter, you can actially listen for add sounds much better

My only issue with the barrel is my nice painted leg gets gooey exhaust on it!

I only paint my toenails. Not my whole leg! Haha. Just kidding around.

I use a similar barrel at my shop for all testing of motors. The advice on the barrel given so far is good. Some motors overheat on muffs. The only limitation is you cant run a prop in there.
