Does anybody on this board use a setup like this? Have you ever seen one? I am thinking about using this old timer setup and would like to share some info about it.
Thank you.

Hello JB.
It is a wire line setup with 3 way swivels every 25 feet for the first 125 feet.Off the swivels comes 20 foot monofilament with hook and bait on the end. The whole thing is weighed down by up to a pound of sinker on the bottom when still fished and sometimes up to 4 pounds when trolled. The pole used is heavy duty and is called a meat pole. When a fish is caught you have to reel it in and at the same time detach the leaders so you can get to the one that has a fish. The last twenty feet is hauled in by hand. This setup was used in the 200 to 700 foot deep fingerlakes for lake trout and browns. It was popular before downriggers and fish finders. This setup was developed by Seth Green who was a professional fisherman in the New york fingerlakes area and New york state secretary for fishery in the 1890s.

I saw and used a similar rig on Lake Michigan in the '70s for perch.

Don't remember what it was called, but it was a handline with about a dozen droppers, one every 3' or so. The heavy weight was hand thrown out from piers and breakwaters and required acquired technique. I saw one guy who could throw the danged thing about 100' without tangling any droplines. Never saw it used with a rod, though.

very interesting rolmops ... got me wondering about pulling those three ways throught the rod guides.. any info on those "meat rods"?

interesting.

JB- I've herd of something similar to what you mentioned with the multiple droppers. Nowdays they've got a three bait/hook regulation here and in the Sheboygan area south to Racine on L.Michigan the local 'old timers' are rigging Perch with a couple of "Bear Paws" and snells above their main hook(usually a jig).

The three way swivels look like a dog tag bead chain with thin strong spring steel inside that is bend into almost omega shape in the middle so as to allow you to clip something on to it. You may need a larger top guide but not much larger because the middle "eye" of the three way swivel is no bigger than the beads. The whole thing is about 2 inches long and very flexible. The weight of the main line is borne by the bead chain.
As for the meat poles,I suspect they would be heavy duty split cane rods. I intend to use a six foot penn sabre with carboloid guides.
The good thing with this method is that you can target rainbows, browns and lakers all in their own preferred depth at the same time. The only limit here is the 5 hooks per line rule in NY.
