Settin the hook.

I have a problem guys, and I need help. I have had too many people make fun of me for setting the hook too hard. People are starting to make fun of my whole family now. When we go places, people say, "Hey, are you the guy that sets the hook really hard", and I say, "Yes, I am". They don't even know my name anymore. The other day, (while bluegill fishing), I set the hook so hard that everyone flipped out of the boat except me. I knew it was coming, so I braced for it. One time, I set the hook and reeled in a fish that I could not identify, come to find out, it was a crappie, turned inside out. Whether it is a bluegill, or a great white, I really lay into setting the hook. I was wondering if this could be cured, and if not, is there a place I can go to share this with others with the same problem? <br /><br />Thank you, I must now go back to cleaning my fish lips.

All my friends also complain about me been a jerk when I set the hook and now you got me thinkin maybe it has somthing to do with my hookset...perhaps we could form a 12 step program and call it, wait I can here it now.<br /><br />Hi my name is John and I am a Jerk...We could surround ourselves with fellow jerks.<br /><br />Hold on second they always call me a jerk maybe its not my hookset sorry I guess I'm no help

I was watching weightlifting, and they do something called the "clean and jerk". I was thinking, it should be the "jerk and clean"......gotta catch 'em before you clean 'em.

yeah, i heard there is a product that totally eliminates that problem. i think i heard of it from a cousin that knew some guy whose sister's ex-boyfriend once used it. i don't remember where they got it, but i think its pretty easy to put together from parts at a hardware store...<br /><br />you get a short bungee cord, hook one end to an upper rod guide (eyelet),replace the other "S" hook with a piece of leather boot lace. you make a loop of the leather to lasso your family jewels. then tie through hole in end of bungee. <br />-very simple- i hear it works miracles in just a few outings <br /><br /> i think they called it "The NadzBGone"

Of course the NADSBEGONE works wonders but there is another method which works better with less physical damage. This method involves a mercury switch and two electrodes hooked to a power source. The attachment point for the electrodes is the same location as for the above mentioned device. This works by any sharp abrupt movement that causes the mercury switch to activate sending a painful jolt.<br />Now in case someone is reading this in the hopes of getting some useful information try circle hooks. In this case if you set the hook you don't even get to reel in the lips. It does not take long before you start waiting till the fish either moves off hooking itself or you just reel which causes the hook to set itself.

oohhh I'm gonna be rich, you ever see that golf club that has hinges and breaks if you don't swing it right? I think I can figure out how to make a fish pole like that to sell to you guys for 5 easy payments but wait, buy in the next 15 minutes and get it for 4 easy payments of $29.95.

Thanks EBB, I tried the "NadzBgone", and now all I want to do is lay around on the couch and eat cheeto's, kinda like my cat does. I never realized how much my cat and I have in common. He is gonna teach me how to lick in those "special" places today, if I can do that, I may not go fishing again, which would solve my problem. <br />Thanks everyone! <br />Sorry to run, but I forgot to cover up my #2.<br /><br />ok, ok, I think I have dragged this lame excuse for a joke out long enough.

I too have the jerking to hard problem, but mine comes from many years jig fishing with a flipping stick.

I wont even bring up my jerking problem. The only thing I will say is, Mom was wrong........I didn't go blind. <br /><br />I need to shut-up, before I cross that "line".

OK I'll bite......How many times have you brought in a fin and had it sent right back to you? Next time you loose one look at their lips carefully before they swim away. Ifn you could read lips they are telling you that they would be in your boat, instead of telling his friends to hit your lure because the jerk in the boat don't know how to set a hook.<br /><br />Ifn some pooter fin hits my 7inch repala and it comes back with just the lips attached then so be it. Mr Musky gets a second tug just to make sure she is aware she is hooked....Whats you say JB and Muskone? How many have we lost by not being a jerk......

Thats right gonfishn, I would rather jerk and send the little one's over my head, than not jerk and loose a big one.<br /><br />Let them laugh at me, but at least I don't have to tell the story of the one that got away.

Well, I guess its official, I am a jerk, and now i'm proud of it. I will pay my dues and become a member of "Jerks Anonymous". When someone calls me a jerk now, they won't realize that its a compliment. My mother in-law complimented me three times just yesterday. What should our motto be, "I'd rather be jerkin than workin". <br /><br /> Well, I gotta go, got me a fish lip sandwich to eat.
