Embarrassing...but gotta ask so I know for sure...

1992 5.0LX Mercruiser....
When setting timing, do you set/adjust with motor running?

I looked at manual and it talks about start engine...then goes into talking about adjustments but doesnt say while running or shut off.
I have read where someone adjusts by ear....

I also ask because the distributor is on a shaft with gear that spins the rotor.

I havent checked my timing yet on this motor but betting it likely is off just a bit.

Thanks!

achris speaks truth. Use a timing light. Retarded timing will rob performance and fuel consumption. Advanced timing will eventually ruin your engine. Worth the cost of a timing light.

Definitely will be using a timing light, and will adjust with motor running (it it needs it).
Thanks everyone!
