I've gotten my son a new scope for his 308 for Christmas. He's been wanting another one so he can put the scope from the 308 on another rifle he has. Are there any tricks that I need to know about setting the eye relief on this new scope? Thanks for any and all input.

There aren't any tricks really, the only thing I watch is if the rifle is used in cold weather put a coat on when setting it

yup, Wear your normal shooting clothes and the eye relief should be such that when you pull the rifle up into firing position you should have full view without searching....And.. far enough foreword so the scope don't hit you due to recoil. AKA Scope eye

Thanks yall, I hope he likes it. He's always liked the scope I have on my gun and the one I bought him is just like it. A Nikon 4-12X40.

E.F., I hunt with a Nikon Buckmasters 3-9. Nikon makes nice scopes for the price.

Besides eye relief, try to get the height of the base right too. A little more difficult since you just can't move the scope up & down.
A comfortable head position helps in sighting & may keep you from getting your eye to close if you have to pull your head down to see as with a to low scope.
One way is to find what sizes are available, then use modeling clay & "mount" the scope with the clay set at the right height.
Or just keep trying bases until you get it right.

If your going to give it to him for christmas and want a starting point without him seeing it , mount the scope bell , the one you look through 1/2" behind the bolt face. all my bolt actions are in this general area.

I"m going to give it to him for Christmas but we aren't going to mount it until after hunting season is over. Then we'll take the old one and mount it on his Knight muzzle loader and sight them both in at the same time.
