1988 15hpJohnson J15rccs.
How to set the idle ?
It runs and runs good.
Just want to make sure I've got the idle set right.

I have a tiny tach and need the specs on idle etc??

Those really don't have a idle setting. Most people leave it and use the throttle to shut it down. Unless yours still has the knob on the side of the motor then just set it in the water where it idles and shifts good.

1992 ..9.9/15 hp....675 + or - 25 rpm....in fwd gear, warm motor....on tiller models, turn the idle adjusting knob ccw to full slow position...move the throttle cable bracket to change idle speeds

After setting the idle mix, using the throttle stop allows you to throttle all the way down without inadvertently stalling the engine. Just for grins, I went out and checked the idle stop on my '90 9.9 (end of the throttle arm, like yours). It works the way it should. Set the twist grip at the throttle speed you want, then turn the idle stop clockwise all the way -- blocks the twist grip from further clockwise rotation.

The knob on the end of the tiller is more of throttle lock for trolling. People tend to play it while they are running so they never stay in adjustment so it makes a bad idle adjuster. Another nice thing about using the throttle to kill it is it saves the tether switch. I don't know how many I have replaced because people pull straight out on them and break the post off. If you really want to set it the use the cable adjuster in the motor that will make it permanent if you do you may have to resynch the carb to the cam. jmo

under ignition plate( looking from water jacket panels) is philips screv .
this screv is to set idle instead of playing with trotle cable latch

Your engine has the cable type throttle control. The knob on the end of the tiller handle is a fine adjustment for idle speed. You can only get about 4 turns on it, turning clockwise will increase the idle speed.

If that is not enough, then turn that knob about two turns so that it is set about halfway. Now pop the hood and look on the side where the throttle cable end it at. The cable attaches to the throttle arm with a ball and socket type joint (called a heim joint). Pop the socket off of the ball, and you can adjust the initial throttle position with the socket end since it is threaded. Turning it counter clockwise will adjust it further out and increase the idle speed.

My engine, an 86 9.9, is set up the exact same way. I also had idle issues and stalling, until I adjusted the heim joint. No problems now. :)

EDIT: Also give this site a read. He gives good instructions on how to check the timing and adjust the mixture, idle, and timing so you motor will run correctly, especially at low speed.
