Re: Setting Point gap on Tecumseh

Don't know what to tell you, Jess.

Those Tecumseh engines are pretty basic. I don't know what special tool(s) they refer to in the manual. Without reading the manual I don't know what you are trying to do with them.

What is BTDC? Is that Before Top Dead Center? How much? Usually there is a number of degrees BTDC specified for point-break (spark) with stator at idle position.

As for synching throttle and stator there should be some specification of when (throttle position or stator position, or both) one starts to move the other.

If you can give us more info maybe we can help you out.

Whose manual do you have, anyway?

Re: Setting Point gap on Tecumseh

Hy JB, outboard motor: service manual-sixth edition: volume 1.motors below 30hp by Another abos marine publication: To set the maximum ignition advance, set the piston to the proper BTDC position;0.085 inch for AV600,0.095 inch for AV750 and 0.115 inch for AV817 as per instructions in fig. T2-6. Position the proper Tecumseh special tool over the flywheel key in crankshaft as shown in Fig.T2-10, then move controls to maximum speed position ( counter- clockwise ). The run trigger (R) should be aligned with edge "1" of special tool as shown in the inset.--- Fig. T26-Piston position can be mesaured through the spark plug opening using the timing gage (G) avilable from Tecumseh Products Co. (part number 670124),a ruler(R) or dial indicator (D),After determining top dead center, turn crankshaft counter-clockwise to set piston before top dead center (BTDC). Crankshaft should be turned clockwise to set piston after top dead center (ATDC), hope this help, think for your time, Jess
