magneto start

I have one point is this magneto system, it needs to be set at .010" gap .
My manuals say set gap at the high point on the shaft.

Is this on the side, the flat of shaft?
or at the corner 90 degree corner be the highest point on the shaft that the gap should be set?

That's at it's maximum opening.

Usually .0008-.0010"

And from personal experience, if any pitting is left on the contacts at all whatsoever, it will get stuff (debris, dust, dirt) in it, and reduce reliability substatially.

I prefer to remove pointset, dis-assemble them, and file each contact perfectly clean and square to each other. That does not mean run some sand paper through them.

Set them on the lobe, the high point on the shaft.Rotate the shaft until the points open to their maximum and make the adjustment there.Recheck after you tighten any holddown or locking screws.Make sure they are clean and filed as suggested above and I always set them at the maximum setting allowed as they will close up with wear.If it is suggested to use lubricant on the cam lobes do it.Ron G
