I have a 1985 9.9hp Mariner I am replacing the points & condensers and am wondering how to proceed. How do I insure that the gap is set correctly? What is the gap setting? I have been told .020 is this correct?

Re: Setting Point Gap

rest the cam breaker (the part on the points that
rubs against the cam on the distributer) at its
highest point on the cam lobe. Then use feeler
gauge to set gap at points at 20th and tighten
points. You will have to turn the engine to get
the points set on the highest part of the cam.

nitecrawler1,Not sure of the specific point gap for your engine but to set the gap just insure that the rotor and points follower is at high lobe position.

I find that setting the gap to the exact spec often ends up being a touch out after the retaining screw is tightened. If that happens, I add 5 thou to the spec gap and hold the feeler gauge between the points while tightening the retainer, and it's usually set right. Always remove the feeler gauge after setting then reinsert to check that it's actually holding the right gap.

Oops! It wasn't that good that it needed to be here twice. Caused by button frenzy.
