i do have a manual but when I set the timing at 12 btdc the carbs shoot fire. Not at idle but when I hit the throttle. Is this just a carb adjustment issue. The 170 has the three solex downdraft carbs and adjusting them is just little past my knowledge.

do you have the dwell set properly? Did you check to see if the timing is advancing at higher RPM?

Yeah the dwell was good. So I readjusted the vlave lash setting and this cured the problem. Running like a top again.
