Setting timing on '89 Johnsson 40hp but linkage is at minimum lenght already

Hi,

I'm trying to set my idle timing to 2-4 degrees before TDC. (I've read that 2-4 BTDC is correct for my model, can anybody confirm?) But the engine currently dies somewhere around TDC with the idle throttle lever still a bit up, meaning that the true idle timing is even more retarded than at TDC.

This of course means that I need to advance the timing by bringing the timing linkage forward = making it shorter. But as you can see on my picture, the timing linkage is already on the shortest setting. How can I advance the timing now?

Really confused... Thanks in advance.

Which screw did you adjust? I would not worry about idle timing as it is not a critical thing at all. Get a factory manual and do a proper link and sync and it will take care of itself.

in 89 the link and sync became rather involved, manual is really necessary. you tube does have a FACTORY video on your 89 link and sync, look at Brandon's Garage, [h=1]Linkage Adjustments: 1989 and Newer 40, 48, 50 HP Johnson / Evinrude[/h]

Do not adjust anything if you are not 100% sure of what you are adjusting.--------Idle timing is the point where THROTTLE PLATES open up.-----Actual timing at smooth idle does not matter.-----You only set maximum timing advance !!-----And timing on these motors does not go out of adjustment for the life of the motor.-----What is your motor doing / not doing ??

That timer link rod should be set to 2.0 inches from ball socket to ball socket, but as mentioned before, there is a specific sequence of linkage adjustments which must be made to assure proper setup.

It's hard to see in the pic but it appears the timing cam roller may have lost its outer skin. If that's the case you'll play heck getting it to idle.

Timing should on many be ATDC, if it doesnt run at that setting like you say, then id check compression. The precise idle time isnt important but not being within the ballpark indicates something isnt right
