setting timing pointer ------120/140 lv J/E

1. -- i dont have a piston stop, but i have not installed resurfaced heads yet.
so i can watch the movement of the piston to set pointer.
need to know what position the piston is in when touching piston stop.
-
A- piston/conrod are still in forward stroke just approaching TDC.

B- piston/conrod are at TDC in between forward & downward stroke -rite at pivot point-

C- piston/conrod are leaving TDC on down stroke.
--
my knowledge tells me its between A & B.
need to make sure while i have heads off to make timing and lync & sync adjustments correct.
-------------
2. -- while checking recirc. system i used the syringe to draw all the liquid from the lower bearing fitting.
-
before intake went on i sprayed everything down alot with the omc fogging spray, so should i inject strait 2cycle oil directly into upper and lower bearing fittings as a precaution before i start the motor or just leave as is with the fogging spray.

The piston stop locates the piston btdc. Rotate the flywheel ccw until it hits the piston stop. (This is btdc). Mark the flywheel. Rotate the flywheel cw until it hits the piston stop.
(This is also btdc). Mark the flywheel. Half way between the two marks is tdc.

c/6

Hooty

thanx-
so i assume that there is no way to do this without a piston stop, and i need to buy one or spend the $$$ to have a repair shop do this.
-
does any one have the price of the piston stop
#384887 - which omc service tools book says it is used to locate top dead center
- TDC - of piston to center timing pointer

2K - The good news is they only cost about $10.00. The bad news is that I forgot where I got mine - I did order via the web.

You can easily fabricate a piston stop tool by breaking the ceramic out of the metal sparkplug shell and tapping it for a 3/8-24 bolt. Thread a long bolt thru it, then insert it in #1 sparkplug hole. Follow the service manual procedure.

what i dont understand is, the tool is used to find TDC- if you have the heads off, cant you sea with you own 2 eyes if its at TDC or something close.
-
just seems to me that it would be more accurate seaing the pistons than actually using a tool that can be misajusted by the person using it.
-
thats just me, i guess- trying to find an easier way.
-
seahorse - that is a good idea
still the manual relies on the person adjusting the tool correctly. because they are unable to sea the piston.

You can't visually see TDC. There is an area that the crank moves, but the piston does not. I thought the same thing.. tried to visually do it.. won't work. You can be off a few degrees easilly!

Hooty meant to say that when rotating cw, the piston will stop BTDC, when rotating CCW, the piston will stop ATDC. Once you have your 2 marks, you mark it in the middle and set your pointer to it.

You can also use a dial indicator to do this attached to a magnetic base. you just have to stop it from turning yourself by reading the indicator.

We use a motorcycle timing gauge. Its simply a dial indicator that screws into the head.

The piston stop I use is an old motorcycle timing gauge only instead of a dial indicator it uses a Vernier scale. Try a motrorcycle shop and see if they still sell something like that.

c/6

Hooty

i priced the omc tool today @ 34.00- aint too bad
but would be nice to have a cheaper way.
spark plug way sounds better, everytime i read this.
thanx
will check on the cycle way also.

Why not make your own :

Weld a nut on top of an old spark plug, and use a long 3/8" bolt with rounded top so you wont mark piston tops.
