A guy wants to sell me a motor. He says it's a 1988, 175hp, v-6. S/N is 0A181325. My research shows that this serial number range could also be a 150hp but definitely not a 1988. MercPartsExpress says it's a Mercury 2.4L, Model 1175745, but does not give any more info. Called a local dealer but they could not help. Anybody out there that can solve this? Or do I have to look at the carb numbers?

there are web sites that have motor guide like mastertech, but I think you need a little more info I looked on there site and found a 88 but there s# start at A918329 it was 175 hp. and listed a model letter sequence. so if you got the model# you can find em.
its a pdf so it lists gobs of 175hp for about a 10 year gap. they start by hp only.
the 175hp they also gave some 150s too check er out
good luck

Hey Yellowfin that would be a 1985 175hp V6. It was a 2.4 liter with 142.20 cubic displacement. The model layout in its stock form was an EXLPTO. I hope this is all the info you need! Oh yeah the correct model numeration is 1175745 :)
