Several Easy Quick Questions

I'm tearing down a LONG unused '78 Evinrude 140.

1. When cleaning the reed box, I know I need to replace the gaskets. Do I need to replace the rubber wedge-shaped blocks? I think I probably do.

2. Also, a reed question. My manual says there should be a tiny bit of space at the tip of the reeds. Some daylight showing through. But all of my reeds are flush against the opening. No light shows through. Is that a problem? Since its EVERY reed, I'm wondering if that's just normal despite what my manual says.

3. A carburator question. I'm tearing this apart also. My manual says to soak the metal parts in carburator cleaner, but the rubber and nylon parts in solvent. What is the difference? Can you throw me some appropriate brand names?

4. Another carburator question. I don't own an air compressor. Will the can of carburator cleaner (2+2) be sufficient to blow out the areas that my manual says to use an air compressor on?

Thanks!!

Re: Several Easy Quick Questions

The rubber blocks are not a wear item and are no longer available. In fact at sub 6000rpm it's debatable if they even do anything.

There should be no light between the reed and the block although it's not uncommon to find some. Sounds like you're good there.

We normally clean the rubber & nylon parts in mineral spirits etc.

2+2 is a stabalizer / cleaner meant to be mixed in the fuel. Instead of compressed air you could use something like Brake Clean or Electra Clean.

I use berryman's b-12 in the aerosol can in place of compressed air....

Can I dip the reed boxes also? They still seem a little gummy after blasting them with carb cleaner.

Wal-Mart Super Tech Carb Cleaner

one of the cheapest and works VERY well

About the only complaint I have is the condensation on parts cause they 'cool' so much as the solvent evaps

I'd reuse the rubber intake filler blocks. They take up crankcase space, creating more compression on the intake stroke= more hp. That was one of the differences between the old 135 and it's 140 successor. Only the high perf OMC (crossflow) engines used them.
