Hi all,
I bought a 1989 Procraft 1780V a few weeks ago with no motor. In my quest to find a outboard I have discovered that there are many different shaft lengths.I am new to the boating world and I have no idea what shaft length I need.Is there any other things to consider when trying to find a used outboard. I have been looking at a HP range from 125-175.Thanks for any help.

measure you transom where the motor sits, to the bottom of the boat, what is the measurement?

In the range you're looking at you won't find many, if any, short shaft (15") motors unless they're race motors. The majority will be long shaft (20") or x-long (25"). You might run across an xx-long (30") in a 175 but not likely.

Your boat probably takes a long shaft (20"). Just measure & see. When talking to some folks about larger motors they confuse the "long" and "short" discriptions. Get the model number, that usually tells.

you need a 20 inch long shaft. measure from where it sits on transom. to the flat plate, just above the propeller. this is the shaft length. check the data plate on the boat for maximum horsepower. legal ramifications if you go over the rated horsepower.

look for your tag, but as a baseline, my '86 1650 F&S came with a 90HP merc inline six, rated for 130 max. At some point the marine group was selling these with OMC motors. I'd bet a 115 V4 Johnson or Evinrude would put a scoot on that boat. My 90hp merc tops out at about 45 with one in the boat and a full tank of fuel.

Check your ski locker for rot before you buy a motor.
