Shaft Pic?

I have a 1965 33 hp Evinrude long shaft that I have no history on. I started it up, and found it was not pumping water. I pulled the lower unit and found The impeller was fine, but the shift shaft was not in the lower clamp. I see the lower unit has been replaced, And I don't think it was installed correctly. The splines in top of the shaft look very worn down to me. There is about 1/8" that looks normal, but the rest of the splines look worn down to me. Does anyone have a good pic of what the splines should look like? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Better if you can post a pic of your driveshaft. Then we can tell you if it looks ok.

Pull the shaft out of the lower unit. The bottom end splines and top end splines should look alike except for length. EDIT---unless I'm all wet and the top end has four splines. Can't remember off hand.

Hint: The top splines wear usually is caused by rusted-out splines in the crankshaft. That is caused by the previous guy working on it that left the o-ring out and water got in the splines. OR the gearcase or exhaust housings (or both) are bent. At any rate, the drive shaft splines are the least of your worry.

that is one toasted driveshaft. Look at the crankshaft female splines, I bet it will look even worse.
That just happened to my 77 4hp which I bought with unknown history, got it running, first time on the water it all stripped out. you werent pumping water because that shaft isnt turning at all due to stripped splines.

+2 - I'll bet the splines in the crank are toast also.

Re: Shaft Pic?

The crankshaft splines are a lot stronger than the drive shaft ones. Except for one thing: The crankshaft is made of steel, drive shaft is stainless steel. That means the ones in the crankshaft will rust away if water gets in them. Then the rusted-away splines eventually will spin on the drive shaft, wiping those away too, just as you see in the picture. Result is a destroyed motor, all because somebody left a 10-cent o-ring out. This is not the first time this has happend and certainly won't be the last. Word to the wise, that o-ring is there for a purpose.

Heck, do what I did yrs ago with the same prob. I cleaned up the splines of the d/s and the c/s real good. Then installed a new water pump. After that I got some Gray Marine-Tex, mixed it good and coated the d/s splines and c/s splines real good and put it back together and let it sit for two days. Gave it back to the customer telling him what I did and two years later it was still working. Lost track of him after that. It was a 1955 25 HP Johnson.

Well look at it this way. The d/s and c/s in their present state are no good. If it works for awhile he'll get some more time out if it knowing what's wrong with it. It may not work as it's just a gamble.
