shaft sticks out to far for prop

i am new to big outboards, and the prop that came with my motor looks like it is short. it looks like it is missing a washer before the castle nut, or the prop housing is just to short. i have no idea what it is missing so please help.
the motor is a 1973 evinrude 50 hp

Probably missing the thrust washer that goes on the prop shaft before installing the prop.

The thrust washer goes on first, then the prop, then the splined spacer, then the nut & pin. Assuming you have a prop with an OMC hub and it's the correct size for that gearcase.
