Hi Everybody,

I use a 35HP Evinrude Outboard from 1983 on my inflatable boat(length 4,3 metres).

The outboard is a long shaft but normaly i should use a short shaft on my inflatable boat.

Does it cause any problems if i use a long shaft outboard instead of a short shaft on my boat?

Thanks for your help!!!

I can't see it causing any problems except that the boat draws more water than it would with a short shaft.

Hi AJ168,

What do you mean by " the boat draws more water"?

Do you mean more water splashes around?

Does this also reduce the top speed?

Thanks for your replies!!!

The long shaft goes deeper, Desperado. That means it needs deeper (draws more) water.

Your English is sehr gut, desperado. Better than a lot of Americans. :)

The long shaft will have more drag than a short and, yes, it will reduce top speed some.

Re: shaft to long?

I see!

Thanks a lot for your explanations!!!

So next time i better look for a short shaft!

Maybe i can get a damaged short shaft engine and assemble the short shaft on my engine!

Just change the shafts! That might work!
Some work, but better than buying a new outboard.

Make sure that it's the same model engine that you're taking the lower unit (shaft) off of that you own. You'd be pretty lucky to find a replacement that worked and would be cheap.

I run a long shaft 1975 9.9 on my 12' tinny and it works just fine.
