Force 1985
85 HP

Today, for some reason, my spark injector shattered completed into the boot. It was the #1 cylinder. I noticed after I had started the motor after refueling. we had boated for around two hours. What problem does this usually indicate? I was thinking this may indicate an overheating engine or severe vibration from driving full throttle.

Whatever caused it truly is a pain in the arse.

Thanks,
Rob Reeves

Re: Shattered spark injector

Hi Revo,

Spark injector? Spark PLUG?

This little guys are usually VERY tough. can't imagine any operating condition that could have casued the problem. More likley, when the cowel was removed, the plug got "cracked" by a "wack" of some sort.

If you can leave your hand on the exhaust cover plate, without getting burned, while motor is up to temp, your probably not overheating. Even if it is over-heating, this would not likely cause the plug to carck. I think that if temp were enough to crack plug, the motor would likely melt-down.

I'd just replace the plug and keep an eye on things.

Was the correct plug installed? plugs come in different sizes, shapes and lengths. It may just be that your old plug was sitting too deep in the cylinder and got WACKED by the piston. but if that were the case. It would have happened as soon as the motor were turned over.

The more I think about it, the more I think that the plug got WACKed when the cowel was off.

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

Re: Shattered spark injector

Yeah, it is not a typical spark plug......It does not have an external electrode. The cylinder side of the "plug" is flat. I am 100% sure it was the right plug.

It went bad after I shutdown the engine and refueled. If I wacked it,it was before or after I launched when I was at home. I left the boat in the water as I went to get fuel.  Why did it start acting funny when I restarted it? Maybe it was wacked earlier and weakened the plug and the hot-cold-hot cycle completely shattered it? I know the "spark plug" removes heat from the cylinder. Maybe it overheateed and cracked it? It ran perfectly for two hours.......it is strange...Call Robert Stack.....we have an Unsolved Mystery.

Hey Revo,

Maybe Stack is our guy!
Anyway, Yup, familiar with this style of plug. Something I've seen once or twice before; Wacked the plug and didn't realize it. This put a hair line fracture in the ceramic. Somtime later, engine vibration finnished the job.

Just a guess BUT,... i figure somthing similar likely may have happened here.

Good Luck & let us know if this becomes a habit with your boat. We made need to call "Unsolved..

HAVE FUN!

Yeah, I think that solves the mystery.......The water was a bit rough......and I was driving fast.....Plus I have a 1964 fiberglass boat...lol...not the most smooth ride.....

Thanks,

RR
