here's the story.

had a whole lower end replaced, but kept my original prop.

found out the hard way the skeg was SLIGHTLY smaller, and the prop at lowest rotation sat just under the skeg tip...

on all 3 blades it appears about less than (i'd say) 1/8" has been shaved off the blades because i ran across rocky ground slowly, the motor was dragging like 2 seconds, well enough to eff the prop.

anyhow, i know that a prop that's banged up can cause vibration inside your lower gears (what parts exactly does it hurt?)

NO blades have been bent/chipped off pieces
question is, will having a partially shaved tip on all blades eff my inside gears by causing vibration while running? or am i ok still?

(if anyone has any links or info to share on bunged up props and the damage they can do, PLEASE do share, thanks!)

Send it off to a prop shop to be fixed or get a new one.

Well, there's a seal around the prop shaft. If it's vibrating bad enough it can cause this seal to leak, letting the oil leak out and water to leak in. Can you figure out what parts are damaged because of that? (All of them)

You mean your newly rebuilt gearcase?
It could just be exhaust residue. very common.
If its gear oil it will have a distinct smell. If it is exhaust residue it will smell gassy.
If its gear oil there will be water in the gearcase.

Re: shaved off part of prop :(

I just realized something. You are saying that your prop had such a large diameter that it sticks below the skeg? I didn't think that was possible. I thought the length of the skeg was greater than the distance from the propshaft to the bottom of the anti-ventilation plate? Anyone else ever see a prop longer than a skeg?

the prop (should be, as far as i know original) was 10 3/8" as stated in the motor specs manual....
the lower unit was from a completely different old 'rude. maybe im guessing something w/ like a 20hp that may have called for a smaller prop? (uneducated guess).

but ya, at lowest turn the prop hung slightly below the skeg - as i said, found this out the hard way.
