Well, after sitting since late July, the boat is alive again!!!
VERY special thanks to wncrjb, who spent the weekend in Knoxville just to help me get everything together and tuned. YOU ROCK MAN!
The newer engine is a combination of an '84 block, a '72 head (as best we can tell) and about a '77-'78 manifold (assuming we read the casting #s correct). The only odd thing we really noticed during the assembly was the manifold... It has the "d" shaped ports whereas the head has the large rectangular ports. Since the manifold came with the boat, I assumed it was the original, but maybe not. It also only used 5 bolts to attach to the head. It seemed like a pretty large gap to span on the manifold, but so far, no water leaks from it, so I'm assuming we're good there.
Everything went together fairly smooth. We were able to fire it up and wncrjb did his magic on the fine tuning of the timing and such. Good compression all the way around... 135 all the way around.
We did discover one problem tho; The carb really needs to be rebuilt. It didn't want to idle below about 900 smoothly and when we pulled the plugs after 10 minutes of running, they were very black... sooo...
Anyway, thanks for everyone's help on the board from time to time on this project of mine. Wncrjb had his service manual with him and I'm now a convert to the "good book". It really did have all of the info we needed. I'll have to pick one up here soon.
I'm so excited now I can hardly stand it!
