I've been searching high and low for a whitewater capable river raft I could afford to beat up and learn in. I finally settled on one of these for $400. It's a '95 Odyssey hypalon 14' bucket boat. I'll probably start out using it as a paddle boat for 3-4 guys and our gear. Once I'm sure I want to I'll order a frame. I've found a great guy in Colorado who builds them at very reasonable prices. I've disovered the greatest expense is going to be oars. Unless I can come up with something more reasonable I'll end up paying more for the oars than I did for the raft. I'd welcome thoughts on lower cost oars that are suitable for up to the occasional class III but mostly I-II water. Getting excited. Already started planning a trip.

Could you use something like this for your oar shafts and add your own blades and handles?:
