I have a 1995 mercruiser 3.0 carb. And the shift assist kill switch is killing the engine. It's staying on until the engine about fully dies. I believe it's worse from forward to neutral than from reverse to neutral. I've have disconnected all cables individually and checked them. They all move nice and smooth. No sings of wearing. I'm going to double check cable settings but I believe there in spec. I've dumped a ton of time and money into the boat and this is my last issue... any ideas/help would be tremendously appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

So with the lower shift cable disconnected and using 2 fingers with grease you can move the lower shift cable freely?

The shift assist should self center at rest and that should not operate the switch. All it does is provide spring tension help coming out of gear

Yea that's not the problem, I took that out of the equation. Is it normal for you to have to spin the prop a little bit to get it to shift all the way into forward or reverse when it's on a trailer not running? Because if the prop is sitting just right when I try and shift into reverse mind you while not running it binds a little bit and causes the cutoff switch to move over but if I spin the prop a little bit while doing it it slides in with no problem

with motor not running on a trailer the prop needs to rotate to engage a gear when shifting. If the dogs are not lined up properly they wont engage the gear and force the switch to operate

Ok thanks, it slides into forward but binds going into reverse. So I've made sure all cables are adjusted to spec and I've greased every pivot point, but still same issue... if my idle is too high could it cause an issue? I don't feel like it's very high but maybe a little. Thanks again for your help.

I personally haven't but I visually inspected thoroughly from what I can see from turning the drive left and right and looking in there. From what I can see the Bellows are intact and in good condition the rubber isn't chalky or cracking. Why what were you thinking?

Water droplets get up into the shift cavity and create a grey mud like substance that gets pushed into the slide opening and prevents full travel of the slide resulting in the operation of the shift switch when trying to get into reverse gear.

Ayuh,.... Ya won't know til ya look,....

The shift switch shouldn't move at all, on the trailer, with the motor idlin' at 650/ 700 rpms, shiftin' into, or outa gear, either gear,....
If it Does move, something is wrong,....
