Thought I would provide an update- I was able to get the cable out with little problem...the new/old boot I had a heck of a time getting off and their are pieces stuck as it tore getting it off so clean up is slowing me down. My boat is a Rinker 270 and has a 9' beam so compared to most boats I've looked at, much more room to work than most. The exhaust bellows is pulled off but even then, cleaning the surfaces up is a challange!
When I pulled the transom before I did not know about the heat shield material and got it all jammed up in the transom trying to get it out- eventually took a drill to it from the stern and managed to remove enough material to finally get the cable out but it was an maess- reason I bring it up I did not notice that there was what looks a guide that goes into the transom for the cable to ride as it moves with the trim- don't have one but will replace when I pull the drive next year to check the alignment.
So as I also mentioned, had a heck of a time getting the stupid bellows to stay on- eventually the solution was the rubber got so tacky from the acetone cleaning off the failed attempts at gluing it, it stuck to the metal and quit pulling off. I don't recall the brand of adhesive I used but it was not Merc and that has been suggested and purchased for this go around. Would that acetone have broken down the rubber and that's what caused it to fail? That boot had been on there only a few months. Anyway, my actual question is once I glue it on and put the clamp on it, how long before it is fully cured and when can I start yanking on it to make sure it's going to hold?
