Shift cable adjustment help

I've got a 1999 SX-M drive and I recently replaced the shift cable. The throttle assembly is OMC. The boat is a 1999 Chris Craft. The replacement cable is an OMC OEM part and is the same length as the one which came out - 14 ft.

My issue is that I ran out of adjustment at the outdrive - in other words, when the throttle is physically in the neutral position and the shift actuator at the outdrive is in the neutral position, the threaded cube which locks into the shift actuator linkage with the cotter pin runs out of threads- it wants to go another 1/8" towards the bow.

It does physically shift into fwd and reverse, but the engagement into fwd comes way too late as the rpms are already starting to climb at that point.

Prior to installation, I verified the throw of the new shift cable and it was right at 1 3/8" which is the limit allowed in the manual.

What am I missing? I don't have any adjustment at the throttle control end that I can see. I did remove the throttle handle but believe I have it back in its original position as when it sits perfectly at 12 oclock, its dead in the middle of the throw from full throttle fwd to full throttle reverse.

Thanks

Re: Shift cable adjustment help

Just did a test. I ziptied the shift actuator linkage about 1/8" in front of the cube, which was at the end of the threads- boats shifts in and out of reverse and fwd like it should. Seems I don't have enough adjustment in the cable.

Is there any issue to using a die and making another 1/4" of threads on the shift cable at the outdrive end?

Re: Shift cable adjustment help

Alright, well rather than do something really permanent and run new threads on the cable (which may over-torque it) I made a linkage extension. Its about 1/2" long and just allows the cable to pull the shift actuator linkage further towards the bow - shifts in and out of gear right on time now.

Don't know if I goobered something up during install or maybe this cable was just a little bit long but at least it works now.

Did a water test and it worked great.
