shift cable adjustment

I have a 3.0L 140I/O Mercruiser. 1995 model It will go into reverse just fine but when we put it in forward you have to get the rpms up to about 3000 to get it to go. I was planning to adjust the shift cable or replace it. Could you tell me how and maybe if you have a diagram that would be very helpful.thanks

ok ... I tried to adjust the cable but I didnt have enough thread on the adjustment now what??Should I just replace it
