Shift cable affecting trim sender?

1988 Cobra 350....When I shift into gears sometimes it is hard to move lever forward, and when it is, the trim guage will move up and down as I attempt to shift. If I do not have this problem and shifts normally, the trim guage does not move. So I pulled the boat out of the water, and there is a red cable that loops down, and looks like it is catching on the trim sender. The cable is either red or orange, about 1/2 inch in diameter. It goes through the transom, and appears to be the shift cable. Should there be so much extra coming into the lower unit area to loop down and effect the trim sender?

Thanks for any help....

That is the shift cable. You should probably try to reroute it or move it so it doesn't contact the sender.....

I cannot help you there.....mine has been gone since 2006. I don't remember anything coming anywhere near the trim sender though.
