Hello
Im going to replace my bellows, and have read here about how to do it, but Im not sure about the shift cable. Do I need to remove it?
Will the shifter loose its gear-position then?
I guess I need to take it apart where its fastened to the engine, will I get the adjusting there of the hose so I can take the hose out with the drive?
Regards
Affa

Disconnect it at the engine. Remove the end so it will slip through the bellows. Remove the clip on the outdrive end of the cable, this will allow the cable to slip through the bellows as you remove the drive housing (not sure of name for sure, the part that the exhaust and u-joint belows attach to [aft]). When re-installing start the shift cable through the bellows before clamping the bellows in place. It is almost impossible to start it after. Use some dish soap or oil to help the cable slide in easier. You will have to adjust the shift cable after you are done. (Not as hard as it sounds). You will also need an exhaust bellows puller to do this job. (might be able to do it without)

DougV>

hello
now is the time to buy a service manual.
if your cable is an older fwd entry then it is time to update it to a armoured core aft entry cable. when the manual describes fwd or aft it is refering to which side of the gimbal housing the cable threads into.the old style cable with support tube was more prone to fail. are you going to change all the drive bellows or just the shift cable bellows? if you do remove the exhaust bellows then a bellows expander tool will be worth its weight in gold at reassembly. I see no reason to pull the exhaust bellows for just a cable replacement. you will have to pull the drive so its a good time to inspect u-joints and gimbal bearings.make sure you do not get sand or grit in the new cable housing. also check the upper shift shaft seals they like to rust away./ make sure water has not been leaking ino the shift slide pocket area. other than that good luck and enjoy the day :)
