I need to change my shift cable boot I don’t want to pull the hard drive off people tell me it’s possible is there anything I need to know I have a 92 MerCruiser thank you
It is not possible to replace the shift cable bellows without pulling the outdrive. You must also remove the shift cable by disconnecting it from the engine shift plate and pull it through the old bellows, and thread it back in through the new bellows.
You will also need to remove the bell housing hinge pins so you can swing the bell housing back and to the side so you have enough room to pull the cable, and properly fasten the bellows back to the gimbal housing.
So while you're in this deep you may as well replace the drive shaft and exhaust bellows at the same time.

Ok I replaced exhaust and shift boot got back together then notice the main boot had a crack in it , lol I know ,, my question is can that be changed without ruining the new shift boot. 92 MerCruiser..
I know that this is not going to be well received but contrary to popular opinion I was able to do the shift bellows on my 97 A1G2 without pulling the drive... I trimmed it all the way up and turned the outdrive to the port side to get as much room as I could and disconnected the cable from the inside of the boat and pulled it through carefully as possible as to not kink it... then I greased the cable then slid the new boot on and reinserted the cable into the transom assembly installed the clamps on the boot and reconnected everything inside... and has been good to go since... 400+ hours later... now please keep in mind that I do not recommend doing it this way... I do think I got lucky... it can be done but again I do not recommend doing it!
