Hello all,
and thanks alot for all the help Ive had from you.
Ive come that far that my outdrive and bell housing is off, and now I need to replace the shift cable.
I read at mercstuff something that confused me a bit, and wondered if someone could help:

Pre-Alpha
& Alpha

This cable threads from inside of the bell housing. Boats which were made from 1965 to 1983 had cables which threaded in from behind the bell housing. These cables are no longer available
http://www.mercstuff.com/shiftcable1.htm

- Mine is threaded from behind I guess, (that is where the locker is), but when I look at the installation instruction it says that the one threaded from behind is the newer style, and the one threaded from inside the bellhousing is the older style.
http://www.mercstuff.com/shiftcable2.htm
Does any one knows whats right, and which shift cable I should order, I also need a new shift cable guide and the slide, so maybe there is a kit that includes all those parts.
I can also see that there is a special tool for this, can I manage without?
Regards
Affa

The one that is threaded from behind IS THE NEWER style. You will need the socket or you can make one if you have a welder. Also look at Merstuff again. It shows the whole kit you can buy, Item # 1450.

Thanks Trent
I guess that mine is the newer style then, but it is thread from the inside of the bellhousing, and the locker is behind the bellhousing, is that correct?
Regards
Affa

Hello
affa
there can be some confusion as to cables. when they talk about fore and aft cable entry the description is based on how the cable threads into the gimbal housing while the housing is mounted.if the cable hex nut is located on the out drive side it is aft entry. if the cable hex is on the transome side it is foreward entry. merc makes a 1/4 stright pipe tap to convert forward entry to aft. DO NOT use a standard pipe tap.the new kit eliminated all the support stuff and cable cutting. the installtion will be like the 83 up and alpha stuff.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks Rodbolt
I guess mine is aft entry then.
Do you know if there is a picture of the kit, or what it contains, or the part number.
I think Ill replace the slide and stuff in the bell housing when I have it apart.
Thanks for telling me how to make the tool!
Regards
Affa

Thanks Trent
I saw the picture earlier when you told me, the thing is that Im buying a whole lot of other parts at marinepartsexpress, and I guess they only have mercruiser original parts, and I would like to buy everything at the same place, since shipping cost is more than 100 $ to Norway.
Regards
Affa

Mercrusier offers a shift cable kit. P/N 19543T2. It has everything you see in the picture.

HI again
I was wondering if anyone could tell me where those 2 O- rings with the same size on top of the picture above, on Trents post should be.
They where in my outdrive kit as well, but I couldnt find out where they belong.
They look to small to be placed where the U-joint coupler goes in the bearing.
And the other 2 is for water supply and at the end of U-joint?

affa
the two rings that are the same sze go on the driveshaft almost to the ujoints. they take up slack between the shaft and the gimbal bearing to prevent knocking. the other large one goes on the water port. the last one goes on the shaft just aft pf the splines on some driveshats. the one that will kill you is the tiny black plastic sleeve. it is impossible to replace while the engine is in. if the original is still in the transom assy it will be fine.
good luck and keep posting
