While pushing through my new shift cable on my bravo one outdrive, the plastic insert in the gimbal came through into the bilge. My question is it necessary to put it back. I cant reach it as these 454 engines take up just all the space in the bilge.I would probably have to remove the riser and the manifold and I don't know if I could reach it then.

Yes, it needs to be there, and this is the reason you need to have a string tied to the old cable when its removed. You can buy another plastic piece, but your main issue, is getting it back in is going to be a bear without pulling the motor.

I did get one back in without pulling the motor, but there was a string run thru it.

Did you remove the plastic spiral around the cable before removing the old cable?

With it being around the new cable, you can work it into the whole, just takes a lot of finesse (so to speak). Same thing happened to me, sort of, but what you need to do is get a string thru the plastic piece. Then get plenty or string so you can add something like a tape ball to use to push the piece back in. Get the piece close to the hole and then use a thin screw driver or wire to position it while using the string to pull in into the hole.

Use the string and not the cable to get it back into the hole

It will wear into the cable from vibration. So you can get away with it for some time, how long don't know, but will not happen for a few years, but just guessing
