I have determined that my shifting problems on my 1988 Merc. 165 is due to a tight shift cable. When it is worked back and forth it seems to loosen up ever so slightly. Is there an easy way to lube this cable. It probably needs replacing but am wondering if I can wait until next season. What type of lube would you reccomend?

I've been told that with OMC you use a "Moly Lube". I'm not sure what it is or where you get it, but thats what I know.

This is a common problem....Replace it. Or your engine will start dieing during shifting if it has not already started.

I have had shifting problems ever since I bought my boat I have replaced my cable several times I just did it yesterday took about 1 hour As far as lubing you would need something thin some one told me once they make a tool that is used just for that .It might have been a motorcycle part you could use. .Let me know and I could walk you through the steps to change it .You should have a manual though Above I meant a thin oil of some type .My problem has been just a little water on that cable and it goes down inside my engine box hinge was alowing water to go onto that area good luck

You might try working in some automatic transmission fluid. Rub some on the shaft ends and work the mechanism, then repeat the process.
