How on earth do I get to that newer style shift cable retainer nut? I have the lower unit off. Do I press the upper part of the trim up and turn it all the way to the left? It would be so much easier if this was an older style where the nut was on the outside but it's on the inside. This seems to be very difficult to get to.

This whole time I thought I was dealing with a Bravo but the more I research it looks like I have a pre-alpha. I'm sorry if this wasted anyones time, especially hoot.

the only thing I see wrong with that web site is merc manuals say to use a stright pipe tap and not the standard tapered pipe tap. you must run the tap from the fwd end that is already threaded to insure you pick up the thread lead.<br /> good luck and keep posting

What I don't understand is how to get to the retainer nut on the inside of the bell housing. Even by pushing up on the bell housing and pushingb it one way or the other, the nut is impossible to get at with any kind of tool. There has to be another way that I'm not seeing. Do I take the bell housing off? Come at it through the boat? Thanks for the help. You guys certainly are pointing me in the right direction.

By the way, I'm curious about something. If the cable is okay but the core wire is missing, can I replace just the core wire without having to take the whole cable off (thereby avoiding the unreachable retainer nut)?
