I finally got into my required maintenance this weekend. I'm to the point of having a new shift cable routed up through the sleeve, with everything still apart.
I have some question about how much the red part of the cable needs to be able to move, like with drive raising/lowering. It seems like it needs some play, but the boot at the other end of the sleeve (in the boat) is wire-tied to the grommet, which fits snugly around the red part. The old one would slide back and forth inside that grommet, but I'm not sure it was supposed to.
This was way overdue. Red part of the cable had a couple of good cracks, and there was crud and/or fine sand inside the shift lever area. All those moving parts were fairly dry and unlubricated. The o-ring on the hex fitting where the cable goes into the pivot housing was dry and shot. I'm hopeful things are gonna be WAY better after I'm done here.
On the bellows, the exhaust was rotten; the driveshaft one was still holding, but had some cracks up near the clamp (not all the way through). They both had the number 87 on them, so I believe it's possible they were ORIGINAL to the boat, and had never been changed.
Fun stuff. There's been some hurdles, but nothing too terrible. Bolts holding on the pivot housing were probably the worst thing so far. Really tight. Found a few things done wrong too, like the plastic spacers being on the outside of the trim cylinders, instead of between them and the drive.
I'd upload a couple of pictures, but I gotta figure out how to do that.
