Shift cable repair ?

Anyone know if there is a way to replace the inner portion of the shift cable on a 1978 400 stringer? It has somehow got a slight kink and a bit of a fray up on the end inside the shift converter. The outer portion of the cable is still good.

Has anyone been able to repair one? ( silver solder, tig weld) Might sound crazy but if the repaired spot was kept small enough, it should still go around the pulley ok. And save about $500.

Thanks

I'm interested in the same question. I jammed the cable at the top end and it has a big kink that prevents it from going into forward. All I want is the inner cable but having issues finding it.

The whole thing has to be replaced. $500???? What in the world are you looking at? They run 30-40 bucks right here at i-Boats

30-40 for the electric shift cable maybe, not for the hydromechanical shift. They are around $500 for a new one.

Re: Shift cable repair ?

I'm going to try to silver solder the bad spot today. If that does not work, I have another shift cable that the outer cable is scrap but the inner cables are good. I might try to remove the pucks from one end and replace them after putting them in my good outer cable. I'll let you know how I make out.
