Shift Cable

I have a 26ft 95 chris craft with a volvo penta 7.4 d/p. Last weekend when I was reducing speed from full down to neutral to enter a no wake zone and it shifted into reverse when I got near neutral. That happened twice and it kills when that happens. On the second occasion it didnt shift back into forward right away. After taking it out of the water I took the shift lever off and the shift cable is won't move all the way back into the neutral position. Everything looks ok on the shift lever so I am thinking its a problem on the other end of the cable or outdrive. All proper fluids have been changed and checked. While loading it still shifted in and out of forward and reverse fine. I just dont want to cause more damage and there is definitely an issure somewhere. I obviously dont have extensive mechanical experience but repair my own vehicles. Any tips and or suggestions?

Re: Shift Cable

Sounds to me like you may have some shift cable issues. Pull the cover off the back of the drive and see if the shift mechanism on the drive is horizontal in neutral, and going all the way into fwd and rev when shifted.

What drive model do you have? Pictures work if you don't have numbers.
