Re: shift clink on 1991 evinrude
Yes sir i just acquired this boat.I ran it again and noticed if i slow the motor down to slow idle it didn't clink, maybe i had it running too fast when i brought it down to neutral.
Yah, they'll make some noise when you shift them with the engine speed too high. Slow the engine right down before shifting into or out of gear. It'll save you bunches of bucks.
The noise you're hearing when the engine's running too fast when you shift into neutral from forward or reverse is the snap caused by forcing the clutch dog out of the gear under too much pressure.
Just be more careful when shifting to get the engine speed down, then move the shift lever quickly to shift gears. The worst mistake of all is to move the shift lever slowly. It'll ruin your shift dog clutch. That means $$$ in repairs.
