Since I found out the parts match up on both motors, I need to replace the rod and lever on my good motor. The original repair manual doesn't really talk about how to do it. Anybody ever done this? Is there a better resource than the manual? Going to start by trying to pull the good one out of the bad motor. Thanks

Re: shift control rod and lever

I assume you mean the upper shift rod. Odd piece to need to replace I would have thought though.

The joint with the lower shift rod is accessible via a cover in the side of the leg I think, if not once the gearcase has been lowered a little.

The shift lever components and the connection to the upper shift rod are accessible when the power head is removed.

Removal of the lower shift rod will require dismantling the gearcase I think.

You might find the diagrams in the parts catalog at http://shop.evinrude.com/ helpful in conjunction with your manual

Re: shift control rod and lever

I attached a pic, thanks for the site. #39 is what I need to replace. The handle pops off but that part has a pressed on bracket around the rod that the lever bolts to. Thanks again for the diagrams, should help out quite a bit. As for right now, a drill and a cotter pin make a pretty good fit.

Re: shift control rod and lever

Got the part swapped over today. I was actually pretty surprised on how easy it was to take the powerheads off. Besides the new carb kit I bought not being the right one everything worked out ok. I have to try and take back the kit for the right one. The one question I have is, when in nuetral at idle with the hose and tank hooked up, the idle is low. When I pull the hose off and run the gas out, the motor runs at a much higher idle. Anyone know what maybe causing this. The tank is 2 years old along with the hose and primer.

As the engine runs out of fuel, the mixture leans out (fuel/air). This results in a higher rpm for a period of time.

okay so it's normal? I just thought that it was weird because in neutral, I can't rev the engine very high(which before I thought it would rev alot higher). Oh well, it runs and shifts now so I'm happy with that. Thanks
