I have a 1974 Merc 650 S/N 3816214. Up until last Saturday I never had a problem with the shift controls. I first put it in neutral, got the engine started and put it in reverse to back off of the dock. I then tried to shift into forward and the shift control wouldn't budge. I know I shouldn't have forced it into gear, but I did it anyway. Now, I have one gear...forward. I am able to start the engine by aligning the gear shift lever to neutral, but even when in neutral, it still turns the prop. If I move the lever back to reverse, it goes forward. The forward gear seems to work just fine. I just have no way of idleing in nuetral or using reverse. I'm sure I'm going to have to disassemle the control box, but can anyone give me any suggestions on what might have happened or what to look for once I take the control box apart?
