My starboard engine quits when going from reverse to forward. Reviewing some of the other forums it seems that it could be the shift cut out switch but it doesn't happen when engaging reverse only when moving from reverse into neutral or forward gear. since my power steering is run from the starboard engine it is very troubling when docking.
thanks for any help.
unct296

Re: shift cut out switch

what type of drive

on a merc if the shift cables are hard to move or not adjusted correctly the switch will not be able to turn back on after moveing the shifter

when it is working correctly it should only kill the motor long enough to let it come out of gear

tommays

Re: shift cut out switch

I guess I neglected to tell you it is an Alpha 1 powered by 5.0L LX Mercruisers manufactured in 1994. The FAQ topic only address the engine cutting out when engaging a gear. My cuts out when disengaging reverse only.
Stan

That Merc service bulletin above should be what you're looking for.

unct296

If you have shifting problems, 2 possibilities:

1. Bad shift cable
2. Cables needs adjusting

Always try the second first, its the easiest(not really) and cheapest. When you change the cable, the adjusting comes by default.
