I have 89 vip with 2.3 ford motor and cobra outdrive. Just replaced the transom shift cable this weekend, I used the bellcrank tool and shifter cable tool. Got it all together and adjusted cables(went by book and thought got it right).

Toke her on water today still no reverse( reason why changed transom in first place). Tried backing out of dock and no reverse just high revs. waited till got turned around, and shifted in forward. It died on me, so put back in neutral and cant remember if it toke off in forward then or i shifted in forward again. But the shift lever was in neutral position and was going forward at a nice idle.

Is this just an adjustment issue at th engine end or am i looking at something else? Also the prop will not spin at all now by hand its locked in either rev or forward. Thanks

Re: shift help

The transom shift cable needs to be properly adjusted at both the engine end and the lower unit end. Misadjustment at either end can prevent proper shifting.

I suggest starting again from the beginning and following the factory manual (not an aftermarket manual.)

I used the bellcrank alignment tool along with the bar for the cable end. That seemed to be a breeze. Its where the adjusting if the cables where I got little lost and may have messed up. Was hoping could get away from taking that outdrive off again

Re: shift help

Could you have gotten the shift fork on the outdrive turned shifted so it is not in sync with the control box?

Not quite sure. I finally had enough took it to a shop, got it back today after 331 bucks and still not adjusted right!

The main problem was I must of cracked the shift guide when installing the sterndrive, and the first **** in water with pressure busted a ear off the shift guide.
