I have a 1994 MerCruiser 3.0 alpha one. I have a new lower shift cable. All cables in linkages are moving freely and seem to be working great. But for some reason my shifting out of gear into neutral will stall my engine out more than it should and it takes longer than it should. Making tricky docking impossible. I have been working at this for a month now. Through new parts and process of elimination I'm still stuck. I had a theory at first that if my idol was a little higher it wouldn't stall my engine out. But yesterday I decided to try turning it down and it seem to shift a little smoother. It's still not where it should be but it is a little better. I read in my manual that my idle should be between 6 and 800 RPM in gear. But I can only get it down two about 1100 on my tac. Before it's so low that it just stalls. I could be wrong but I'm assuming my tac is off. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would suggest starting first with adjusting the lower shift cable. Use this vid in the adults only area

Get a hand held tach to set rpm

Next check timing, don't know your serial number so
0L096999 and below 1 BTDC
0L097000 to 0L340999 1 ATDC
0L341000 and above 2 ATDC

I have adjusted my cables per this exact video. 3 different times. Not sure about timing but if it was off wouldn't the motor run noticeably funny? It runs great. And I'm going to get something to check rpm at some point but idk how much it will help because either way it's not gonna idle any lower without stalling. I've have been working on engines for a while and the rpms seem to be right as far as it stalling when they are low. Any other ideas?

If timing is not set correctly you will being getting a little less power so changing gears may just kill it. You stated

can only get it down two about 1100 on my tac. Before it's so low that it just stalls

so this tells me the timing is either off, carb is not clean or adjusted correctly, or combination of both

Do you know if there is a way to check timing without a timing gun? Pretty sure my carb is in check.
