I've read all the stuff in the sticky at the top from Don S. I've read my Mercruiser manual and think I generally understand the switch and shift mechanism.

Is there anyway to test the shift interrupt in the driveway with the muffs on ? I know it needs water load on the prop to work properly, but is there anyway to immitate having the boat in the water to test ?? I want to test here, but don't have a lake, river, pond in the area.

Yeah I understand I actuate the microswitch to kill the engine, but is there anyway to simulate the prop load will in water to verify that the shift mech. is working properly which will then cause the switch to kill the engine. I damn near ran it over the dock last summer trying to get it out of forward and want this fixed, but need a way to check here at home.

Another thought....would a deep stock tank filled with water simulate having the drive in water to check the system?

By the way....it's an '85 230 MR mercruiser.

Connect the switch temproarily to a VOM then...

WITH THE ENGINE OFF - put it in gear and have a friend, keep firm pressure on the prop while you move the shifter to neutral.

Then watch the meter.

As 180 stated, have someone load the prop. With the engine off and drive in forward the prop will rotate in one direction only. You'll need to load it in the other direction (ageist the dog clutches) to verify the interrupter switch is engaging.

Yes, that will work. Just don't give it any throttle, or you will blow the water out of the tank.

Unless of course you want to blow the water out of the tank... in which case have a friend stand behind the boat :)
