Hey everyone, I've been fixing up my 1977 sea ray 220 and ive been having a shift issue. The shift interup plate never moves. Ive adjuststed the lower shift cable to 6 inches while some one turns the prop counter clockwise till it stops while i push the cable in, then after putting the shift cable back on the plate in the position for forward i install the control cable to fit the bracket perfectly then then turn the barrel 4 tuns away from the end of the cable. Am i doing something wrong? oh and the lower shift cable is new and i checked the measurements for the control cable and it looks fine.

Does your shift interrupt switch work when activated manually? You wont see the interrupt switch work out of the water. needs to be under load.

yes it does, the actual plate doesnt move properly. While working on it i noticed if i adjusted the cables within the manual specs it will move the interrupt bracket while the engine is off but not while its on. I even went as far as adjusting the reverse lock valve by putting the shifter in reverse and lining up the triangles on the base and arm.

you need to understand the shift interupter will only work coming out of gear IN THE WATER WITH A LOAD ON THE PROP
never on land unless the cable is bad.
what type of lower cable rear or aft entry, and did you cut it

Re: shift interuput not working properly

The cable was replaced last season by a mechanic which didnt really seem like he cared if it worked properly or not, i recently did a gimble ring replacement and the cable looks like it was a pre cut style when i disassembled it, i just routed it the same way , double checked all the measurements to make sure they matched mercruiser specs and made sure the cable didnt bind. How often do control cables go bad, id rater just buy a new one than take it to a marina, the install instrunctions are pretty strait forward?
