Hi Firemedic
Can you give us the mod# and ser# or at least the hp. of your evinrude? What exactly do you mean shot? Is the handle broken? Is the shaft broken, or just stuck? With a little more imfo. I sure someone will have an answer. Good luck.

Model # 85853A. This assembly is located approx 6 inch down from the powerhead on the right side. Shot as in it will not move up and down to good only here neutral and reverse mostly moves side to side.

Hi Firemedic
You have a 85hp.evinrude 1968 with mechanical shift. It sounds to me like you might have a loose bolt or something stuck. You will need to remove the shrouds from the back of the exhust housing to get at the linkage. Hopefully it just needs lube and adjustment. How dose your gear oil look?

I tore down the lower unit and the gear oil was milky I replaced all the seals. I took out all the bolts onhte shroud, but it looks like the shroud is connected to the piece that actually attaches to the boat.
