Shift lever problem?

I just need to know about how far I should have to move my shift lever before it actually should be putting drive into gear or move throttle on carb. It is a Quicksilver 88105A7 control. I have to move mine about 3-4 inches before it engages. thanks

Did I stump Don? wow just joking. I just went out and opened the throttle the whole way to check the throttle plates in carb they are opening the whole way so i dont think there is a problem with the Shift lever.
