I have 86 140 evinrude. the shifting has been very stiff. I opened the shift lever housing, and found parts to be chaffing on the case. there is a large spring on the lever shaft that may have lost some sring. also i was wondering if there are parts missing. Is there somewhere i can find a parts breakdown of the shift lever housing.

Re: shift lever problem

Sounds like the shift cable might be going downhill, take it loose at the motor and see if that frees the control up if not take it loose at the control and try to move it by hand if it's real hard like that you need a new cable.

Re: shift lever problem

everything works fine the problem is in the controls. the parts inside are wearing on the case. this is why i think there may be missing parts. or possible the large spring on the inside is just worn out.

Re: shift lever problem

Check the bushings on the main lever if it lets the lever flop back a forth replace the bushings, haven't found a site that shows a exploded view of the control still looking though.
