Over the weekend I found that I was unable to shift into forward or reverse from neutral from my Yamaha 704 remote. All I heard was the grinding of gears but never engagement. I was finally able to restore operation, I believe by trimming up and down. I am not familiar with the 704 but think all adjustments are done at the motor linkage. Is this correct? Don’t want to dive into the 704 if that is not the likely suspect. The 704 installation manual is not much help but the F150 service manual implies adjustments are made there unless cable length needs to be incrased or decreased.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The adjustments are at the motor end. If you can't get the correct adjustment there, you can adjust the cable ends in the control. When the cable ends are screwed into the eyes on the control end, one or two threads should show sticking-out past the threads (initial and most common settings).
