I took the powerhead off to take off the lower unit, after putting it all back together, and reconnecting the shift linkage, I noticed that no matter how tight I make it, it will always disconnect on shifting forward or reverse.

this is a 1968 evinrude 6hp. any ideas?

thanks!

The clamp doesn't have to be tight but the rod (either upper or lower, has to be in far enough that the bolt is in the notch on the rod. That's what holds it.

I dont know if thats possible on this style....unless I am missing something. the notch slips into the hole, and the bolt is in its own hole all toghether, and you tighten it down. they dont ever really come in contact with each other.

like I said, I could be missing something though.

Re: shift linkage disconnecting

Glad it was that simple. As for the shift rods, they go into each end of the brass coupler. As the rod goes in you'll see the end and as it goes in further the notch will line up with the bolt hole. When the bolt goes in the rod cannot get back past the bolt. The coupler doesn't nesessairly grab the shift rod (it will to a certian extent) to hold it, the shift rod just can't get past the bolt.
